Hekate & The Winter Solstice

December is a special time of the year. We are in the dark time of the year – a time to look inward and reflect on your past year. This month leads us to the Winter Solstice which falls on December 21st this year.

Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year, and signifies the transformation from death back to rebirth. During this special time of year, let’s reflect on Hekate and how she nurtures us as we move into the new year.

Many people push back against this time of year. They make themselves busy, they spend time on crafts and gift giving preparations. And while this is all well and good, as we come close to the Winter Solstice, if we slow down and listen we will hear the call of the Great Mother to stop and reflect.

The Winter Solstice is a time for pondering; for thinking about the things that the past year has held and changes we want to make for the upcoming year. It is a time to set new intentions and create goals to continue on our path. Take some time this month, slow down, and reflect on this crazy, different year. We have an opportunity stretching before us as we start the new year and return to the light. Make sure you’re heading in the right direction.

Hekate calls us during this time of darkness and cold, to pull inward and join her in the Goddess cave. In the ancient world, the cave was both feared and revered as symbolic of The Great Mother and as a projection of the great womb that birthed all of life. The cave represents a place of darkness and warmth, where you separate yourself from old patterns and behaviors that no longer serve you. The cave is a place to let those things go and be reborn to new behaviors and things that make your soul sing and increase your joy each day.

As we look forward to the light returning little by little, think of this as a call for you to bring forth these new things that you want in your life. Are you feeling stuck in your job? Maybe the Goddess is calling you to think about a change of profession. Are you feeling unmotivated and stuck where you live? Maybe this is a time to really reflect on what you need in your life to motivate you. If the things in your life are not feeding your goals, then this is the time of year to really think about how you might change them so you can grow.

The Winter Solstice is a time to listen to your dreams and the quiet messages the Great Mother is giving, and lean into your intuition as you make decisions for the future. A great way to do this is to have a Daily Meditation – a time where you quiet your mind and spirit and ask the Goddess to guide your thoughts on what you need to flourish in your future. I suggest you keep a journal or notebook where you write down things that come to mind. These may not make sense at the time, but be assured in the future the messages that you have received will begin to make sense.

Blessings to you as we head into the Winter Solstice!

May the Goddess carry you forward to another year that brings you peace and joy in your life.
